Posting: Literacy Through Hip Hop (LTHH)
Program Volunteer for LTHH
Contract period: October 20, 2009 - June 13, 2010
Weekly schedule: Once a week
Literacy Through Hip Hop provides a unique educational
opportunity for youth, grades 6-7, who are struggling with
literacy. The program teaches basic reading, writing, and
communication skills to youth who have been identified as
having literacy issues, by utilizing positive hip hop as the
primary teaching tool. The program aims to improve basic
literacy and reduce the societal barriers that these youth
may encounter.
The job will include:

Working with children grades 6-7 in one of ten communities
in the Greater Toronto Area (including Rexdale,
Islington/Lake Shore, Lawrence Heights, Dorset Park,
L'Amoreaux,) and Hamilton – we are hopeful that we will be
able to find volunteers who are from or have strong ties in
these communities
·
Assisting Instructor in implementing curriculum at one of
the above sites
·
Keeping students focused and involved in the project
We are looking for a person with:
·
Experience working as part of a team
·
Experience working with youth, grades 6-7
·
Knowledge of and strong interest in Hip-Hop music and
culture
·
Oral communication skills
·
Knowledge of the special needs of youth in lower-income
areas and the issues of youth struggling with literacy
·
The ability to work at least one evening per week, Monday to
Thursday from 3:30-6pm
·
An ability to develop equal relationships with people of
different cultural and class backgrounds
·
A strong understanding of the strengths, challenges and
needs of youth, particularly from differing backgrounds
socio-economically and culturally.
·
Leadership experience in the Hip-Hop community
